MIS GROUP ANNOUNCES ITS 2008-09 ARTIST OF THE YEAR
By Brandon Fichera
The results are in and the students are ready. Last Thursday the Music Industry Studies' student-run music label, MIS Music Group, named Seth Turner, Las Vegas native and longtime country musician, "Artist of the Year." Turner, a finalist chosen from a large pool of applicants, took part in a Showcase Concert on November 10th that pitted him against talent from as far away as Connecticut and as nearby as the San Fernando Valley.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the MIS degree program and the 11th anniversary of the label, which offers hands-on experience to students interested in career paths in Music Business Administration.
Each year, the Music Industry Studies Group label announces an open call for musicians from across the country to apply. Three finalists are called to the CSUN campus to appear in a Showcase Concert from which the Artist of the year will be chosen. Next, a class of forty MIS majors work diligently for 9 months to do all they can to launch the Artist. This includes free recording studio time, the production of a full-blown media kit and the introduction of the Artist to the nation's finest and most respected labels.
“This is the class that every MIS Major looks forward to,” says Jessica Velasquez, chair of this year’s A&R team. “I couldn't wait to take this class because this is where you learn so much about the industry…Seth has an amazing talent and is a great representation of traditional country music. We are looking forward to taking the next step with our artist!”
Worthy of special note this year was an announcement from Mike Curb, Founder of Mike Curb Records, that Curb Records will audition the label's Artist for possible audition to their roster. Curb Records is responsible for major acts such as Leann Rimes, Tim McGraw and The Judds.
The Music Industry Studies major is the largest degree program in CSUN's Music Department which itself is ranked among the top 25% of the nation's music schools. The MIS major, launched in 1994, has been immensely successful and active in launching the careers of many music industry professionals. The program's enormous success has prompted the design of a master's degree program in Music Industry Studies that will launch in the fall of 2010.
